Information for Oswego
Oswego is positioned at the website of an Osage village known as No tse Wa spe, because of this "Heart Stays" or extra loosely translated, "Quiet Heart." Jesuit Missionaries from Osage Mission (now St. Paul, Kansas) who labored most of the Osages known as the village "Little Town," possibly due to the fact the band of Osages who lived inside the village were of the "Little Osage" division of the Osage People. More particularly, the Osage Village of Little Town became described as "Little Town Above" via the Jesuits, to distinguish it from some other village, which changed into on occasion placed just to the east of Little Town, known as "Little Town Below." While Osage villages were moved pretty frequently (in keeping with climate, looking situations, and sanitary conditions) Little Town Above was commonly positioned on the bluff overlooking the Neosho River, in which Oswego sits today. Little Town Below regularly sat near Horseshoe Lake, within the Neosho River Valley approximately a mile due east of Oswego.
